7 day study tour - Khura Buri, Ban Talae Nok and Surin Island

Visit beautiful coastal villages and islands in Thailand, all while helping to protect and conserve the environment and engage with communities. Spend time with local community members in Ban Talae Nok to witness their way of life and learn real stories of the impact of the 2004 Tsunami on their community. Next, travel to the Surin Islands to meet the Moken People and host an English camp, and enjoy the best snorkeling in Thailand. This project provides students the perfect opportunity to engage with sustainability and local culture, all while cultivating personal relationships!

Itinerary

Meals included: B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner

Day 1 - Conservation and Ecological Restoration Service Project (L,D)

  • Program starts in Kuraburi at the Andaman Discoveries office for a pre-trip briefing and cultural orientation.
  • Transfer to the accommodation leave your luggage and then go directly to the community project.
  • Play a role in helping to protect these amazing and beneficial ecosystem by participating in an environmental conservation and restoration service activity.
  • Try your hand at planting mangrove seedings restoring riverbeds or replanting the endangered water lily species unique to this area!
  • Work alongside the local community and learn about the ecological systems in the local area and how they are meaningful and important to the local communities.
  • Enjoy eating delicious meals with your local community partners and even learn about the local ingredients that they use to cook with!

Overnights: Local Accommodation or Tent Accommodation at National Park (most are located on a beautiful stretch of undeveloped beach)

Day 2 - Conservation and Ecological Restoration Service Project (B,L,D)

  • Breakfast at National park or accommodation, transfer to the project continue you community project.
  • Lunch at the community project
  • Dinner at national park or Accommodation

Overnights: Local Accommodation or Tent Accommodation at National Park (most are located on a beautiful stretch of undeveloped beach)

Day 3 - Service Project and Homestay village (B,L,D)

  • Morning finish off your community project.
  • After lunch, say goodbye to your local partners.
  • Transfer to the charming village by the sea of Ban Talae Nok.
  • Meet your host family, and be welcomed into their way of life.
  • Take a walking tour of the community with your local guide to learn about the history and lives of these villagers.
  • See an area of the village that was destroyed by the 2004 tsunami and learn how this event affected the community
  • Take part in a handicraft workshop and learn the art of Batik, a technique of hand-dyeing fabrics by using designs drawn in wax.  You can create your own design or have your hosts draw one for you, then color in the beautiful designs, and keep your creation as a souvenir.
  • Take a short walk to the beach where you can relax and bask in the spectacular colors of an Andaman Sea sunset
  • Dinner – enjoy a barbecue dinner on the beach with your hosts and feast on freshly-caught seafood, garden-fresh vegetables, and Thai curries.

Overnight at Homestay, comfortable bedding and mosquito net provided.

Day 4 - Local Life (B,L,D)

  • Breakfast at Homestay and then Handicraft workshop – the women’s group, established after the tsunami, makes beautifully hand-crafted soap, using only the finest natural ingredients. Watch an informative demonstration and then make soap for yourself with the expert guidance of the soap ladies, and keep your creation as a souvenir
  • Learn to weave leaves of the nypa palm with the villagers and help make traditional roofing from a local mangrove plant.
  • Lunch – enjoy authentic southern Thai food with your homestay family
  • Fishing with the locals – Learn to fish with your host family. Depending on tides and expertise, fish in the canals or the beach with nets or poles. Spear shrimp. Collect clams or catch crabs with traps.
  • Spend your time before dinner relaxing on the beach.
  • Dinner at homestay. After dinner, enjoy more cultural exchange by trying on traditional Muslim clothing. Learn more about your hosts’ religion and how it is connected to their culture and daily lives.

Day 5 - Surin Island Moken Experience (B,L,D)

  • Early breakfast at your homeasy and then transfer to Surin island by speedboat.
  • Surin island National Park is a paradise of fine white sandy beaches, thick jungle, crystal-clear waters, and some of the best coral reefs in Thailand.
  • You will have a unique private tour of Surin island with the original Moken inhabitants of this tropical paradise!
  • Check into your tent accommodations at the National Park Headquarters.
  • Lunch at National park Restaurant.
  • After lunch, meet your local guide and take a long tail boat trip to the Moken village.
  • A tour around the village is an insight into the intricate relationship between the Moken and their surrounding environment. Learn about the brightly colored “Spirit Poles” and Moken homes, built on wooden stilts directly on the beach.
  • Go snorkeling with your Moken guide.  They will take you to a wonderland of colorful tropical fish. Witness the impressive Moken swimming techniques.
  • End your day and return to the park headquarters to relax and enjoy the sunset from the white sand beach.

Overnight: KohSurin National Park, tents on the beach with bedding provided; electricity generated from 6-10.

Day 6 - Surin Island English Camp at Moken School (B,L,D)

  • After breakfast, Transfer to the Moken village.
  • Begin your service project at the Moken School. Put on an English camp with the excited and enthusiastic students and teachers.  The students are eager to learn about different countries’ wildlife, trees and plants. Introduce games and activities from your own country!
  • Return to the park headquarters to have a Thai style lunch.
  • After lunch, return to the Moken village and continue your fun and interactive English Camp.
  • In the evening, return to the park headquarters and enjoy free time to walk the beach, relax, and enjoy the sunset.

Overnight: KohSurin National Park, tents on the beach with bedding provided; electricity generated from 6-10 pm

Day 7 - Surin Island Moken Experience, Cultural Activities (B,L)

  • Reunite with your Moken guide and return to the village.
  • Learn how to row the traditional Moken rowboat and learn the traditional art of spearfishing.
  • Say goodbye to the students and your new friends from the village!
  • If time permits, head out for one more snorkeling adventure.
  • Return to the park headquarters to have a Thai style lunch.
  • Then return to the mainland around 4.30pm. End of program.
