The main way that villagers make a living is from fishing and farming and the community takes only what they need from nature while also carefully conserving the mangroves and ecosystem.

Itinerary

Meals included: B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner

Day 1 Cultural Exchange (L,D)

  • 10.00 Start the tour in Kuraburi at the Andaman Discoveries office for a pre-trip briefing and cultural orientation.
  • 10.45 Transfer to Ban Talae Nok village. Along the way, we will pick up some supplies for bring to your local hosts and/or the fishermen. We will then meet your host family and be welcomed into their way of life. Take a walking tour of the community with your local guide to learn about the history and lives of these villagers. See an area of the village that was destroyed by the 2004 tsunami and learn how the community was affected.
  • 12.00 Lunch – enjoy authentic southern Thai food with your homestay family. We will also invite some ladies from a women’s soap cooperative to come enjoy our lunch together.
  • 13.00 Join the women's soap cooperative, established after the tsunami, for a handicraft demonstration to make beautifully hand-crafted soap using natural ingredients. Help in the process and then make a soap souvenir for yourself with the expert guidance of the soap ladies.
  • 14.00 Go fishing on the beach with local fishermen and learn their traditional way to catch a meal for their family. Take some time to swim and relax on the beach.
  • 17.00 For dinner, enjoy a barbeque cooking class and dinner on the beach with your hosts and feast on the freshly caught seafood that you have helped to provide, garden-fresh vegetables, and Thai curries (weather permitting, alternative is dinner in the homestay).
  • 18.00 In the evening participate in a cultural activity where you can share stories and experiences with the family and local villagers. Pictures from home are always appreciated! Then try on their traditional clothing to learn more about their Muslim culture.

Day 2 Natural Wonder (B,L)

  • 08.00 Have breakfast at your host’s house.
  • 08.30 Participate in a livelihood activity by weaving leaves of the nypa palm with the villagers to help make traditional roofing from a local mangrove plant. Afterwards, we will take some time to collect some mangrove seeds on the beach and plant them behind the village (only in June-August).
  • 10.30 Return to your homestay to make a local specialty dessert. Try your hand at grating the coconut and filling the palm leaf with the batter. Then grill and enjoy the delicious snack hot off the fire. We will make a whole batch of desserts to give to the children of the local school later today as a nice surprise treat.
  • 12.00 Have lunch at homestay house.
  • 13.00 Walk up to the school for a beautiful view of the island facing the village and the surrounding sea and of course, dropping off the surprise snacks for the children.
  • 14.00 Pack and say goodbye to your friendly hosts. Transfer back to Kuraburi.
  • 15.00 Arrive back to the town and walk to the evening market with your translator.
  • 16.00 End your program at the Andaman Discoveries office and transfer on to your next destination.
